The sewage treatment plant at the Empire Beach wastewater treatment plant in New Jersey is on lockdown due to a suspected chemical spill.
According to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the incident happened at the end of June.
The DEOC says the chemical was found in a batch of sewage treatment chemicals stored at the facility.
The New York City Department of Health said that the chemicals were found in one batch and are being tested.
The chemicals were stored at a storage facility at the plant, and the department says it will determine how much of the chemicals are released and how much are released into the environment.
The state said the chemical spill was contained and that it is not a public health emergency, but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the incident was an embarrassment.
